You’ve been phished!

Well, not really. But you could’ve been! Read on to learn a little bit about “phishing”.

define:phishing

Phishing is the fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by disguising oneself as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.

What does that mean?

Well basically it’s a way for threat actors (aka the bad guys) to try and steal information from you. This information can be stuff like:

  • your username/password
  • bank details
  • other sensitive information

How does this happen?

Usually the threat actors will send you a a dodgy link through some email or something. In this case I sent it to you through messenger.

If this was a legitimate phishing link, I would have a login screen of some sort where you would enter your information, and that website would look real, but I would own it. So you’d put your details in, expecting to log into a normal site, but instead you’ve given me all your information!

This post was made to explain phishing in a very simple manner to friends. I used bit.ly to hide (and shorten) the original URL, and sent the bit.ly link to them. Having a website is dope, because I cooked this up in like 5 minutes or something!
